Here is a place to share resources that you find particularly helpful with student engagement. If you don't feel comfortable posting them or aren't sure how to just e-mail the resource to alwhitehead@chinooksedge.ab.ca or ask Allan for a quick explanation on how to post items. It's really easy.
I have found that using a timer for certain activities really helps students focus on the task and hand and monitor themselves to stay focussed.
Here is a link to an online timer: http://www.online-stopwatch.com/
If you prefer, I have a downloadable one that isn't quite as pretty but is more functional with the ability to customize the end sound and place a message after the timer goes on for what to do next.

Tonight I was pointed to this article about a teacher who posts his lectures on-line (and has the students view them before class) and then he spends class time working on the problems that would normally be the homework after the lecture. I am intrigued by the idea of posting the content first, and then working through related concepts in class. But I teach the grade 8s too, I know for this to work the students would have to buy in and do the work before-hand.
